Edinburgh World Heritage have undertaken a thermal imagery survey which revealed how effective shutters and plantation blinds are at preventing heat loss through windows. The thermal imaging cameras revealed that heat leakage through large Georgian and Victorian windows was effectively stopped when shutters and curtains were closed.

So, are shutters energy efficient?
Chiara Ronchini, energy efficiency officer for Edinburgh World Heritage, said: "The thermal imaging exercise really proved that very simple measures, like closing shutters at night or using full length curtains, can have a dramatic effect and make a dramatic improvement on the amount of heat being lost through the windows."
