Window Shutters

All internal plantation shutters are made as a bespoke window covering by Brighton & Hove based Shutterly Fabulous. Designing and installing internal shutters in London, Surrey, Kent, Essex – in fact throughout almost all areas of the southeast – there are few windows for which we have not found a fantastic shutters solution!

This photo of shutters in a Bromley home shows what is called a sunshine bay window. Typical of windows installed on many 1930’s properties, the windows are formed into an angled shape, similar to the shape of a 50 pence piece. A key issue when putting plantation shutters onto a sunshine bay window is that the panels cannot fold back completely away from the window. The challenge is not unique to Shutterly Fabulous shutters but is simply down to the physics of how the panels will fold back. In essence the panels will ‘bind’ when you try to fold them back.

However sunshine bays are among the most popular windows that see plantation shutters installed on them. The panels are hinged to open individually to enable you to access the window when you need to clean the glass or open a window. As you can see in this photo the shutters have been designed to be full height shutters with a mid rail. The mid rail on the shutters is the solid horizontal piece of wood that is approximately ¾ of the way up the window. This matches the framing of the window which many customers like as it helps cover up the heavy framing of the window. With many of these windows being replacement uPVC windows which are not particularly aesthetically pleasing, the shutter looks visually much more attractive.

This said, the main benefit of the design is that with the shutters mid rail, you can tilt the slats at different angles on the top section versus the bottom section. Therefore you can have privacy on the lower section and maximum light through the top shutter slats. As these windows are often on properties close to the road, the lower shutters slats are tilted at an angle, to stop passers-by seeing in. Therefore the fact that the shutters do not fold all the way back, is a moot point as they are most often closed, with slats tilted for privacy.
