Interior window shutters are a practical and stylish addition to the home that will provide light control, privacy, safety for kids and more. However, when going through the design process, differentiating between the various shutter slat sizes can feel confusing.

To help you find the right shutter louvre size for your window, we have put together an informative guide below.

Which shutter slat size should I choose for my window?

What shutter slat sizes does Shutterly Fabulous offer?

To ensure there is variety, we offer four different slat sizes: 64mm, 76mm, 89mm and 114mm. The different sizes available allows for all tastes and practical requirements to be met.

Does the shutter slat size affect privacy and light?

The 64mm and 76mm slats are perfect for reducing the flow of light. Choosing one of the smaller sizes means that there will be more shutter slats within the panels, which in turn, will allow slightly less light into a room. However, if you’re looking to increase natural light, opt for larger slats (89mm or 114mm). The wider louvre design means that when the shutters are open more light will be able to enter the home.

If privacy is a significant factor, both shutters provide this, but the smaller slats will offer a bit more coverage on the window due to there being extra slats on the panels.

Which shutter slat size should I choose for my window?

What works best in contemporary and period homes?

Wider shutter louvres make a statement and will enhance a modern home. Providing a streamlined look that will complement other aspects of the room, shutters with a larger slat size will lend itself nicely to a contemporary space. If you live in a period home that holds a lot of character and traditional architecture, opt for the smaller slats that will contribute to the feel of the room.

What shutter slat size works with large and small windows?

If you are looking to dress a small window, opt for shutters with a smaller slat size for a clean and balanced finish. When dressing larger windows, wider louvres will work best. Covering a large amount of space, bigger shutter slat sizes will achieve a proportional clean-cut look.

If you are unsure about what will work best in your home, our shutter experts will be able to give you professional advice and assistance with your choice. Book your free appointment here.

Will the louvre size restrict my shutter style choice?

The different slat sizes will work with all of our shutter styles. So, you’ll have the freedom to choose Full Height, Café Style,or Tier-on-Tier without any issues.

To see how the different sizes will look in your home, we are offering a free no-obligation appointment with a specialist who will be able to seamlessly guide you through the different options and offer their knowledge on what will look best in your space. Book your free appointment here.

Window dressing Kitchen

The kitchen is often deemed the heart of the home, with homeowners spending more active time here than in any other room. Whether it be entertaining friends, preparing meals, or simply having some down-time, the kitchen is without a doubt an active space.

As a result, the design of our kitchen is really important, from the smaller design details, such as surface finishes, through to the lighting in the space, creating the right ambience in this room is essential. Not only should practicality be a main consideration but ensuring that this busy hub is designed not only for today but also for years to come, is imperative.

Window dressing ideas

Incorporating kitchen shutters into your space is the perfect solution for dressing kitchen windows. They work particularly well in a kitchen environment as they allow the light to stream in whilst helping to hide unsightly views such as outdoor bins. Additionally, issues such as water damage and maintenance aren’t a problem for shutters as they can be simply wiped clean if any spills or splashes occur – a common incident in a busy family kitchen and one not solved with curtains and blinds!

Wanting to add some extra light to your kitchen/dining space? Patio doors are a great addition, however, as they reflect ample natural light around the room, this also means that privacy is often spared and as such, these large expanses of glass can be tricky to dress and style. Shutters are a simple, practical solution to window dressing patio doors, not only providing the privacy you may require, but also controlling the light and temperature – perfect for all year round! Read our blog: Choosing plantation shutters for patio doors.

Window dressing bathroom

Bathrooms are the ideal place for relaxing and unwinding from a long stressful week. Bathroom shutters are the perfect solution for any bathroom needing a quick fix, turning it from a standard bathroom into a serene and peaceful setting.

The bathroom can be a notoriously tricky space to decorate due to the amount of moisture in the air, so more should be considered when updating it. Shutters are a handy solution for your windows, providing not only style to your space but also the perfect amount of privacy. Perfect for use in high-moisture areas of the home, the Shutterly Fabulous vinyl range won’t warp or get water damaged over time, unlike curtains and blinds. Made from lightweight aluminium and coated in vinyl, these shutters are 100% water resistant, meaning that they’re suitable for use in wet rooms.

Café Style shutters are a great option as they provide that much needed privacy, whilst still allowing the natural daylight to flood the room. Why not think about incorporating cool blue and grey accessories into a scheme, to create an on-trend look in your bathroom. Alternatively, Tier-on-tier shutters can offer great flexibility, as each panel can be adjusted independently.

Window dressing bedroom

The bedroom is the place we spend the most of our time – the hideaway we come to in order to relax and unwind, shutting away the stresses of the rest of the world, and yet, with so much emphasis on the look of our living rooms and kitchens nowadays, we’re all probably a bit guilty of neglecting to give ourselves the bedrooms we deserve.

Your bedroom should be a refuge – a place to escape to after a busy day and a space that fills you with feelings of peace and serenity. One of the easiest ways to update your bedroom and make a real impact on your mood, is to incorporate colours and textures that elicit a calming response from the brain. Colourful Bedroom shutters are a great window dressing idea and can work with natural light to inject colour in an effective and controlled manner. Bedroom shutters enable you to balance the light and privacy in the bedroom, where comfort and well-being are a must.

Solid shutters are a great option, whether you’re looking to insulate your room, add privacy or block out the light at night, the opaque nature of this style will act as an additional protective layer from the outside world.

It’s also worth considering plantation shutters when redesigning your child’s room. Benefits include privacy, heat insulation, light control, but most importantly, unlike curtains or blinds, there are no chords hanging down which instantly eliminates hazards.

When choosing shutters, many of our customers opt for neutral tones and natural wood. These colours can be selected from our standard colour options, and there’s no denying that they work beautifully, but occasionally someone rings up asking for something a bit different. And that makes our ears prick up!

When Sue Merry moved into her new-build home near Horsham, she decided to order colourful shutters from us – with a different colour for each window! Intrigued, we paid Sue a visit to see her shutters being installed.

Hi Sue, thanks for inviting us into your brand-new home for your shutter installation. They look amazing! You’ve opted for a lovely shade of pale teal for your patio window full height shutters. What made you choose this colour?

SUE: I was looking at some very bold colours initially. Before I retired, I was a primary school teacher and having been surrounded by loud designs over the years I naturally gravitate towards quite a bright look. But when I showed a friend my original choice, she said it was too childish!

So I toned it down a bit and thought, “Maybe I could match the colour to some of my existing furniture.” I have some lampshades with matching cushions that feature seagulls on a lovely teal background. They really complement my Egyptian Cotton walls so I thought the teal could work.

Sue Merry with her pale teal full height shutters. Top right, her bedroom shutters in Green Verditer.

It certainly does! You’ve really gone to town on colour, utilising our Custom Colour Matching service to make different choices for each window.

With the back bedroom red shutters I originally looked at a much gentler shade of pink, but in the end I went for a deeper shade called Leather, because I thought, “If I’m going to go for it, I might as well go all in!”

In the kitchen it was quite hard to find the yellow I was after, because some of them are very acidy and I quite fancied a kind of custard colour – which is very kitchen-appropriate!

For the front bedroom I have my favourite colour – which is Green Verditer (Little Greene) – but I couldn’t have it in the lounge because it didn’t go with the seagulls! I mean, if I was sensible, I’d choose one colour for the whole house. But why be sensible!?

I think choosing 4 different colours has been a reaction to my previous home, where bold red was very much a dominant colour throughout the whole house – and I really didn’t want to be confined to just one colour this time.

We’re delighted you love your shutters. What made you choose Shutterly Fabulous?

What I liked about you guys first and foremost was your name, and when your consultant came round there was no hard sell involved whatsoever, which is an approach I prefer. I also like the fact that you don’t sell blinds, curtains or whatnot, you’re shutter specialists, so you really know what you’re doing.

I did see a local company, but they were very dismissive of colour, which didn’t go down well with me at all! They said I’d be much better off with something more neutral, but I really didn’t want my shutters to be the colour of milky tea.

Now that the shutters are installed, how do you think they look and feel?

I think the shutters look amazing! You could see as they were being fitted that they were going to be great. I’m very pleased with the colours I chose and they all reflect their own room perfectly.

The yellow in the kitchen – Citron 74 by Farrow & Ball – gets the morning sun and fills the room with light if the sun is shining. If it’s a grey, miserable day, the sunny yellow is very cheerful to start the day with.

The deep pink in my bedroom makes it feel like a very personal and indulgent room, just mine, but the feel is still very modern and fun!

The turquoise green in the front bedroom is my favourite colour generally and they give the room a lovely calm, restful look. They also get the morning sun and look stunning.

The big pale blue/grey shutters at the back let in beautiful light and make the room very elegant. I can get lots of different diffused light coming in depending on the angle of the individual shutters.

I’m really glad I went for the split shutters which offer great variation, with the ability to change each room throughout the day.

I’d say the shutters really finish off the rooms properly; they’re so neat and carefully fitted and take up far less space than curtains.

What reaction have you had to them?

I’ve had a lot of friends waiting to see these ‘famous’ coloured shutters – they’ve been on the journey of listening to me decide on the different colours and why – and they’ve seen all my match pots and fabric swatches.

Right after installation, I had a ‘drop in for donuts’ day for everyone to come and see them. They were stunned and amazed by the effect and the difference the shutters made to each room. Everyone loved them all but were mostly taken by the big full length patio door shutters.

Obviously, they can be seen from outside and lots of the neighbours were very interested in what I’d done and there were a few ‘I wish I’d been braver’ comments from those with plain white shutters.

I’m so glad I went for the colours, they bring joy and make me smile, what more can you ask for?

Thanks for inviting us into your lovely home, Sue. Enjoy your shutters!

An introduction to plantation shutters

Originating on the large farm and plantation houses of the American South (hence the name), plantation shutters have rapidly grown in popularity on both sides of the Atlantic over the past 20 years. Manufactured from a range of different materials (ours are handmade using high quality hardwood), they are attached directly onto a window or door frame to become part of the fixtures and fittings of your home.

The key element of a plantation shutter is its slats – evenly spaced elements that can be opened or closed as required. Chances are that when walking down any suburban British street over the past few years, you’ve started seeing a lot more plantation shutters springing up.

We’ve put together this article to tackle a question we sometimes get from curious shutter newbies – are plantation shutters out of style? We’ll explain that, far from it, plantation shutters are as in vogue as ever and are in fact a timeless addition to any home, complementing any interior style.

Where do shutters originate from?

A big clue is in the name. Plantation shutters were first designed to be used on the large plantation and farm houses of the deep American South. Owing to the subtropical climate in the region, with its swelteringly hot summers, traditional curtains were seen as too heavy and stifling. Landowners required a window dressing that allowed for privacy, light control and for cooling fresh air to enter rooms. It led to the iconic slatted design being developed, the white finish that was used to reflect heat remaining the most popular choice even today.

Large slats meant fewer slats and more unobstructed light entering rooms, however come sundown they could be closed completely to allow for a dark and peaceful night’s sleep. Large slats are the defining feature of plantation shutters and are resolutely popular today, looking particularly striking on large windows adorning Victorian and Georgian buildings.

Have shutters gone out of style?

If they had gone out of style, we’d be out of business by now! Not only are we still going strong after 17 years, but we’ve actually just expanded our reach to serve the whole of the UK. Just take a look at our glowing collection of customer reviews that grows by the day.

The number of shutters you see on British streets has grown rapidly over the past few years and this growth shows no sign of abating. By being available in neutral colours such as white and grey, they complement any interior style, meaning they outlast changing trends. And by becoming part of the fixtures and fittings of a home they’re much the same as a new kitchen or extension and are therefore less ‘throwaway’ than blinds or curtains.

Shutters are being reinstated in Georgian and Victorian properties to return them to their original lustre. Indeed, many of our customers request solid shutters, i.e.: solid panels of wood and no slats, to help do just that. We’re seeing an emerging demand to have shutters installed in new builds as they bring an element of architectural detail without the cost of full scale structural renovation, such as installing a fireplace.

Rest assured, shutters are about as timeless as you can get when it comes to home improvements and show no sign of going out of fashion any time soon!

Do plantation shutters suit particular homes?

As well as being timeless, plantation shutters are also incredibly versatile. They suit all types and era of home – flats, houses, Victorian, Georgian, Edwardian, new build. We’ve installed shutters on French doors, in conservatories and even on house boats. Our highly experienced shutter specialists will visit you at home and custom-design shutters to the precise spec for you, taking into account your interior style, age of the building, type of windows and your personal preference. We offer shutters in a huge range of colours and styles, including custom options. There’s no window (or door) that we can’t make look Fabulous with shutters.

An introduction to plantation shutters

People’s perception of shutters is very much determined by whether they have them installed in their home, or if they don’t. Our customers have rated us as ‘Excellent’ on Trustpilot, with feedback constantly revolving around what an incredible impact shutters have had on their home, how visitors have commented on them and how amazing they look. Shutters are a true statement piece in any interior space.

Plantation shutters worth the money - Shutterly Fabulous

This article is designed to give those who don’t own shutters some serious inspiration to invest in them. Hopefully you know from walking down residential streets that they look fantastic from the outside. But what about the other benefits you might not know of. Are plantation shutters worth the money they cost? Are they energy efficient? And do they actually add value to your property? Let us answer these burning questions for you and arm you with the knowledge to go ahead and get plantation shutters installed in your home.

Are plantation shutters worth the money?

There’s a simple answer to this question, and it’s ‘yes’. Shutters are more expensive than curtains or blinds but they’re a totally different proposition. Made to measure and constructed using the finest quality, long-lasting hardwood, they’re totally bespoke to your windows or doors. Not only that, but we’ve designed a large selection of styles, materials and colours to cater to your specific needs and tastes. By being a more permanent addition to the home, shutters become a part of your interior style and can be passed onto the next inhabitants, meaning they’ve got the potential to add value to your property. More on that later.

Plantation shutters by Shutterly Fabulous

Here at Shutterly Fabulous we work with some of the UK’s finest craftsmen and shutter experts who’ll visit you at home to measure your windows and offer expert advice on what will work for you. They’ll return later to install the shutters and are backed up by a dedicated and passionate support team in the office. We’ve been in business since 2002 and now service the whole of the UK, so thousands upon thousands of people already believe that plantation shutters are indeed worth the money!

Do plantation shutters add value to a property?

Again, the short answer here is a resounding ‘yes’. By being considered part of the fixtures and fittings, they aren’t so different to converting to double glazed windows, adding a pristine new coat of paint or installing spotlights, all elements that add value. By smartening up the exterior look of a home they add that all-important kerb appeal. On the inside, they can create a look and style in a room all on their own, for far less than an extension or new kitchen. Their simplicity is appealing to buyers. By installing shutters on all street-facing windows you can achieve that sought-after matching look across the front of the home, another eye-catching element that will draw potential buyers to your property over others. And for blocks of flats, shutters can help to distinguish a property, another appealing trait for buyers.

Are plantation shutters worth the money

Are plantation shutters energy efficient?

You know the drill by now! Our shutters are made from solid hardwood and when fully closed create an added layer of insulation between the outside world and your home. Fitted securely to a window or door frame, they block draughts that can penetrate curtains or blinds, reducing heat loss and also your energy bills. So, not only will your shutters help your home feel warmer, but there’s a good chance you’ll actually see your energy bills go down. How’s that for an energy efficient investment?

Are plantation shutters for keeps?

Tier on tier shutters Shutterly Fabulous

Poonam Sharma with her tier on tier shutters

Definitely! Another positive about plantation shutters is how effortlessly they straddle trends across the years. Poonam Sharma, who edits the Modern Luxe blog, adores her tier on tier shutters. “I’m not sure if this is a good thing or not,” says Poonam, “but I get bored quite quickly and have a tendency to refurbish rooms in our house on an ongoing basis. And if we’d opted for fabric blinds or curtains, I think I would’ve got bored by now. But, I have to say we’ve never grown weary of our shutters. We have them in all our windows at the front of the house, making it look more uniform (first impressions and all that!). They’re the one thing in the house I wouldn’t change. They’re elegant, modern and timeless. We’ve had them for almost 10 years and absolutely love them. Walk down any leafy suburban street and chances are you’ll be struck by the enviable beauty of shutters adorning many of the windows. See how much of an impact they make on bay windows in particular. After all, no window dressing looks quite as classy or stylish in a bay as shutters.

But just how much do those bay window shutters cost? Are they more expensive than shutters for a standard window? And what different shutter styles are available for bay windows?

In this article we’ll answer all of these questions and more, helping you make an informed decision about investing in bay window shutters for your home.

The benefits of shutters for bay windows

Let’s start with the most important one – shutters instantly transform a bay window. They add a level of elegance, class and style that no other window dressing can. From the outside, your home will be the envy of those who pass it – indeed, research has shown that shutters add not only curb appeal but can actually increase the value of your property. On the inside, you’ll smile from ear to ear every time you walk into a room with shutters. Seriously – they have that impact on an interior space and can create a style all by themselves.

Aesthetics aside, shutters help to insulate large bay windows and keep the heat in during the colder months, saving you money on your heating bills. They can also help reduce the noise levels coming in from the street outside. They’re the most versatile window dressing available for a bay too, as you can keep the slats closed for privacy and darkness or open them to let light flood in through those grand windows.

Are bay window shutters expensive?

We’ll be upfront with you – owing to their size and the fact that they are priced by the square metre, bay window shutters aren’t cheap, per se. But neither is their cost prohibitive compared with other home improvements you might want to make. Think of shutters as an investment, not just for your bay windows but for your home (remember what we said about them increasing the value of a property).

Ours are completely bespoke as they’re measured and fitted to your exact window specifications by an expert craftsman. You won’t have to lift a finger – we’ll take care of everything for you from the consultation right through to the fitting and beyond. What’s more, all our shutters come with a 5-year guarantee although if looked after they’ll last in perfect condition for far, far longer. And think of the money you’ll save on your heating bills too!

What different shutter styles are available and how much do they cost?

Our bay window shutters are available in four shutter styles – full height, tier on tier, cafe style and solid.

Full height shutters cover the entirety of your bay window with a contemporary slatted appearance. Ditto with tier on tier shutters, the only difference being that the shutters are split into a top and bottom section that can be operated independently of one another. Cafe style shutters cover just the bottom half of a bay window, making them a great option if you’re looking to keep costs down, whereas solid shutters are, as the name suggests, non-slatted solid sections of wood. They are popular in Georgian properties with very tall bay windows, such as those seen in Bath or Edinburgh, although are slightly more expensive than our slatted offerings. A shutter specialist will discuss which style will look best with your bay windows when they visit your home.

Do bay window shutters cost more than standard windows?

The amount you’ll pay for your shutters is determined by the size of your window. Bays, by virtue of having multiple windows, tend to be more expensive to fit shutters to than a standard single window. All of our shutters are priced by the square metre and your shutter specialist will give you a no-obligation quote when visiting you to measure up.

What’s the most inexpensive shutter you offer?

All of our shutters are handcrafted using the highest quality sustainable hardwood. Talk to your shutter specialist about our Classic Poplar range which is the most affordable shutter that we offer. Cafe style shutters, as in those that cover just the bottom half of a window, present an even more affordable option owing to their reduced square meterage. They ensure that privacy is maintained, whilst enabling light to flood in through the uncovered upper portion of your bay window and most importantly, offer a seriously stylish, contemporary look.
