Plantation shutters are a luxurious window solution that can seem out of budget for many homeowners. However, shutters don’t have to be an expensive investment. Here at Shutterly Fabulous we have affordable plantation shutters available to ensure that everyone can experience the great benefits of these practical yet stylish window dressings in their homes.

If you’re wondering how to make plantation shutters more affordable, we have provided below some informative advice.

Are shutters more expensive than made-to-measure blinds and curtains?

Shutters are thought to be a significant investment, but the installation of shutters is no more expensive than buying quality, made-to-measure blinds and curtains.

How can I find affordable shutters that will meet my budget?

Style

The style of shutters can also significantly impact the final price. Full height, solid, tier-on-tier and hardwood shutters are typically more expensive than Café-Style shutters due to them covering the entire expanse of the window.

Special shapes

The shape of your window can also impact the price. When ordering your shutters be aware that shaped shutters and shutters on a track system come at a slightly higher price. You could consider getting café style shutters on your arched window, which would not incur any extra cost and still provide the style and finish that you’re looking for.

Colour

Lastly, to keep shutters on the affordable side, choose from our basic colour palette with no additional costs. Our custom colour matching service is available, but it does involve an extra charge.

I have a large window how can I make shutters more affordable?

We suggest that you take advantage of online discounts that are available throughout the year. It is the best way to get the window solution you want at a lower cost.

Does shipping increase cost?

If you require your shutters for a special period like Christmas or Easter, we suggest that you order with plenty of time to spare. The need for fast delivery can result in an increased final cost.

Luxury plantation shutters- an investment

Whether you opt for solid shutters, special shapes or express delivery, you can rest in the knowledge that our quality contemporary shutters are an investment.

Due to the thickness and quality of the materials used in our hardwood shutters, they will actually insulate your rooms and therefore save you money on your energy bills.  If that’s not enough, these beautiful window dressing are a semi-permanent fixture that will also add value to your home.

Our team are happy to help you find the perfect luxury shutters to match your budget, get in touch with them today and call the team on 0800 9700 800 to start the process!

Nothing quite beats that feeling of a fresh new set of our classic plantation shutters. Beautiful, stylish and practical on any window type, they truly are the best choice in window treatment. But with such a wide range of colours on offer sometimes it’s a good idea to go simple and choose a classic white window shutter. Take a look at our tips below for an idea of where is best to put white window shutters in your home!

Reflective Shutter Properties

A great factor to consider is the reflective properties choosing white for your window shutters will bring. For example, full-height white shutters on your living room windows, easily increase light as the sun bounces off the white reflecting back into the room. Tilt the shutter louvres to adjust the amount of light flowing in and you can really maximise the amount of sunlight the room will receive. This makes white shutters a great feature in larger rooms such as the living room, as well as smaller darker rooms which could benefit from a little more sunshine.

Whether your home interior is super colourful, to more of a minimalistic appearance, due to their neutral colouring, white plantation shutters certainly won’t be out of place! This makes them a great option for an everchanging style, no matter the changes you bring to your home a clean white shutter will look fantastic on your windows.

White window shutters are a fantastic contrast for darker coloured rooms, making your windows a statement in themselves. This works great for brighter bolder colours like blues or oranges! Equally, they are a beautiful complement to an already more minimalist home, flowing well with white or pastel tones. The options are limitless!

All of our shutters are made from great quality durable materials. Combine this with a classic colour and your window treatment will last for years: a completely timeless look, that unlike curtains, won’t go out of season.

Declutter your life and simplify.

De-clutter your Life

With the New Year well under way many people in the country bring resolutions into their life to try and improve on the previous year. Here at Shutterly Fabulous, one of ours is to simplify and de-clutter our lives. While this is great for making your life more streamlined and easier to deal with, the same can be said with rooms and designs. By leaving your rooms minimal and clear you not only improve your thoughts and mind, but also save time on cleaning! One of the benefits of shutters is the ability to clean them with a quick wipe off, rather than storing dust like material curtains. This means you will be spending less time cleaning and more time doing the things that matter to you.

As one of our favourite poems so eloquently puts it: “Dust if you must, but wouldn’t it be better to paint a picture or write a letter, bake a cake or plant a seed, ponder the difference between want and need?”

How we transformed the windows of this Edwardian mansion with interior window shutters

The Shutterly Fabulous Photoshoot

Ever wondered what it’s like to go behind the scenes of an interior design company’s photoshoot? Clue: It’s long days, hard work, but a whole lot of fun. Take a look at how we transformed the windows of this mansion with our interior window shutters in Kent,  capturing some of our most fabulous shots yet.

The world of interior design is a creative, exciting and emerging sector. If you’re as passionate about interior design as us here at Shutterly, you’ll swoon over this post we’re sharing with you today. Have you always wanted to experience what it’s like to be on set, behind the scenes at an interior design photoshoot? Well, today we’re taking you on a whistle-stop tour of the Edwardian mansion we transformed in Chislehurst, Kent. It’s safe to say we made one truly stunning home even more fabulous…

The Living Room…

Before

Awash with period details such as original panelling, intricate cornicing and heavy cast iron radiators, the living room in this Edwardian mansion was breathtaking. It’s wide-angled bay was the perfect spot for us to show off the benefits of our Tier-on-Tier shutters. Any window dressing other than interior window shutters would have hidden the shape and lines natural to the architecture of this stunning home, and the homeowner was thrilled when she saw how practical – and stylish – the end result was.

After

We installed our Classic Poplar Tier-on-Tier shutters in Bright White to this angled bay. Choosing tier-on-tier gave us the option to keep the grid detailing either exposed or hidden. The flexibility of having two different tiers also allowed us to maximise light entering the room while keeping the bottom tier closed to retain privacy. For extra light control we simply adjusted the louvres in the bottom tier.

Every detail was considered to get the perfect look to accentuate this traditional home. We specifically chose hidden pushrods for this window to keep the look fuss-free and minimal, as there were lots of lines and symmetry featured in different areas of the room as it was. We opted for one of our standard colours, Bright white, to bounce light around the room and contrast against the wooden panelling.

The Bathroom…

Before

As many other homeowners with bathrooms sympathetic to the Edwardian era will know about, most of the day the room has limited natural light entering the room. The bath being situated in the centre of the room in perfect alignment with the window also meant privacy was an issue for the homeowner. As a temporary fix the homeowner rectified this by using a frosted window covering. Fine for daytime bathing, but this can still reveal shadows to passers by when the lights in the bathroom are switched on and it’s dark outside. Blinds and curtains not an option, this was the perfect room for us to showcase the benefits of our cafe style shutters.

After

We fitted our Waterproof Polyvinyl cafe style shutters in Bright white to this bathroom window – the strongest choice of our styles for many reasons. Specifically made for steamy bathrooms and kitchens, our polyvinyl shutter range is impervious to moisture and anti-warping. To make the most of light at all times of day, installing cafe-style shutters instead of full height shutters meant that the top of the window would be constantly exposed, yet the bottom still provides ample privacy. In this instance, cafe style shutters have made a focal point of the grid detailing common in period sash windows and tackled the homeowner’s window dressing issues of privacy and light head on.

The Dining Room…

Before

t’s often forgotten that shutters make a good window dressing solution for patio or French doors. Doors left without window dressing look completely acceptable, but doors dressed with shutters look sensational. Key for this room was to make it feel less narrow while giving it a practical focal point in keeping with the traditional features of the room. We were excited to dress it in shutters from our Elm range.

After

We chose to fit our Premium Elm Wood range in Natural stain to the dining room windows and door to give the room instant warmth and even more charm. We purposefully opted for a darker shutter rather than white in this room which was great for making a focal point of the width rather than its narrowness. White shutters are great for elongating rooms, ideal for small or large spaces whereas Natural Elm’s darker contrast gives the illusion of the doors and windows appearing closer as we entered the room, offering a cosy look. On cold evenings, we imagined this room being full of guests with our shutters setting a cosy backdrop to the scene.

The Kitchen Diner…

Before

Always a tricky room to decide on window dressing for, kitchen diner window treatments need to strike a balance between cosy and practical. The kitchen diner in this home had four sets of very tall patio doors with minimal space to install bespoke curtain rods above, and hang curtains or blinds. With our shutters being bespoke to every window and renowned for being easy to maintain, we were excited to give these doors a new look with our shutters.

After

Full of natural light, this space was a dream to photograph. We fitted our full height Classic Poplar Wood shutters in Bright white to the room to make the most of the light and give a clean minimal look. Generally, the larger the slat size the more space between each slat and thus the more light. We opted for our largest slat size, 89mm, to allow the most light possible to enter the living area. Shutters are easy to clean and don’t absorb smells in kitchens like fabric window dressings can, and opting for this larger slat size offers even more space to get a feather duster between. Important considerations for everyday living areas that can harbour a lot of dust. This is one of our favourite shots from the day.

How to style a minimal home: Q&A with Lou, Little Green Shed

A great lover of incorporating natural materials and all things Scandi into the home, Lou Archell has been writing her blog Littlegreenshed for eight years. During this time, she has gained an impressive, loyal following who are regularly treated to inspirational imagery and advice on creating an affordable pared-back scheme that still looks beautiful and feels lived-in. It’s fair to say that Lou’s home is one to lust over and this is why we were very excited to be able to chat to her and hear her top tips on creating a beautiful, family-friendly home.

Tell us about yourself, your writing career and what inspired you to start a blog

Hi, there!  Yes, I’m Lou Archell, I live in Bristol, UK with my partner Dan and our two sons, Charlie & Rufus – oh and I also write a blog called Littlegreenshed. I started blogging back in 2010, as creative outlet whilst I was a stay at home mum with two small boys.  Littlegreenshed has grown over the past 8 years, from being very much an online diary to the travel and lifestyle website it is today. I am very fortunate to say that writing Littlegreenshed now provides an income to support my family, and I still get to stay at home!

Your blog style is minimalist, pared-back and Scandi-esque – where does your love for this style come from?

My style is inspired from Scandi design, minimalism and from nature. I adore homes that reflect those aspects, think natural materials, pale colours, a calming environment.  My home is very much like that.  Although I do aspire to have a completely minimal space (with wonderful storage & zero clutter) but with two tweenage boys and their growing amount of stuff, this isn’t always easy to achieve.  My blog is a place of calm away from all that home life… a place to write about beautiful interiors, travel destinations and my aspirations and dreams.

Your home features lots of muted hues, natural materials and greenery. What are some easy ways for homeowners to create a similar look?

A few years ago, I decided that I would have a similar colour scheme to run throughout the house. No loud colours anywhere. I become slightly obsessed with only buying homewares, electrical goods etc in white or neutral colours.  For example, I have a white tv, and grey digital radio.  My crockery is white, grey or blue, same for furniture and soft furnishings.  In my home you will not see red, orange (except the kid’s rooms), purple or pink.  Just whites, greys, blues and beiges.

I lead such a busy life, and I work from home, so I wanted to create an interior that made me feel calm. It is quite easy to achieve, you just need to stick to a neutral palette. We have painted all the walls in a soft off white (I’ve used Farrow & Ball All White), which is soft and gives a gentleness to the space.

Nothing in my home is expensive. It is full of items that I have collected from car boots, flea markets or Dan has made.  I’ve upcycled pieces of furniture by painting them.  Just use what you have, paint things, and add plants 🙂

Such great tips! We are curious, having 2 small boys running around, how do you keep your home both beautiful and family-practical? Tell us your tips!

  1. Boundaries Just because you have a family shouldn’t mean you need to compromise on what you like.  Our home is very much ‘used’.  Do what you love, set a few boundaries like no eating on the sofa and all coats and bags must be put away immediately – and you should be fine!
  2. Storage Our house is very small, so storage is a must. We have two IKEA kitchen wall units in our lounge that we use to hide the kid’s computer games, an important thing.  And an old chest of drawers in the dining room, which I painted black, houses our growing pile of shoes.  Think outside the box when it comes to storage and use what you have.
  3. Go with it Be prepared to go with the mess. If things get messy, that’s life. We have scuffed paint and chipped furniture like everyone else.  We probably redecorate a room once a year, it’s like the Forth Bridge, we go around in circles!

What sort of window dressing do you have in your home? And does it contribute to day to day life?

We actually have shutters in all our rooms. I mentioned earlier that our house is a small Victorian terrace, and all our rooms are tiny. So, to me the idea of curtains seems to make our small rooms even smaller, more cluttered and messier.  I love how shutters make our rooms feel bigger. Minimal, with clean lines. They also block out the light and give us privacy too. I don’t think I’ll ever go back to curtains now.

Do you have any big home projects on the horizon? If so, what are they and do you get your family involved with the decorating/decisions?

We are always planning new projects. Next is the bathroom. We put our current bathroom in 13 years ago, when we first moved in, and it’s now looking very tired.  I dream of marble tiles and black taps, we shall see if our budget can reach that far! As for the family, I show them pictures on Pinterest and they give me a thumbs up or down. And that’s about it.

Finally, what’s the best piece of interior advice you’ve ever been given?

Buy everything in white!  Seriously it works.

Loving Lou’s style? Lots of the homes we measure and install shutters to opt for white shutters which can bring that sought-after minimal, scandi design. Take a look at Our Shutter Colours for inspiration – we offer custom colour matching too!

From small acorns…

Where did it all begin, we hear you ask? Well, like most good ideas it all began over a good glass of red.

Our founders Mark and Murray were wanting shutters for their own house, and at the time, way back in 2002, shutter companies in the UK just didn’t offer the quality or service you’d expect to see when making an investment in shutters for your home.

The companies they did seek quotes from were disorganised, arrived late, and charged call out fees to come and visit – certainly not fabulous. There was a gap in the market for a high quality product, delivered with a passion for customer service – something Mark & Murray felt called to fill.

Shutterly Fabulous was born and the hunt for a factory that was up to our very high standards began.

Launching our website…

Our first website wasn’t near what it is today but we knew from the get go we wanted to have a strong presence online. We had a good friend, Rose Periera, based near the new factory we found in Toronto come up with the logo, and found a local guy based in Lewes, East Sussex to build us a 6 page website. It cost us £500 and was number 1 on Google in the first week it launched! It might not have been anything fancy but that site did us proud!

Our first inquiry came from Latest Homes magazine in Brighton who asked if we wanted to place a ¼ page advert in their magazine which came out Sept 3rd 2002. We were naive and when the phone didn’t ring at 9 O’clock on that Tuesday morning we thought we were doomed! However, luckily enough, someone did call the next day and Murray went to do his first Shutterly Sales appointment on the Friday afternoon and got the sale!

Those shutters are still there to this day in First Avenue in Hove.

Stand out jobs over the years…

The Old Railway Hotel, Petworth, Sussex

We’ve done quite a few stand out jobs over the years, but the job we are most proud of has to be fitting shutters to The Old Railway Hotel near Arundel, Sussex which features old Pullman railway carriages as their rooms. The owners lovingly restored these old train carriages to their former glory, now as luxury guest suites.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The carriages had beautiful walnut wood panelling in them which we matched the shutters to, to look as much a part of the original fittings as we could. The rooms looked fantastic when they were finished and to this day we’ve fitted many a stained wooden shutter, rag rubbed by hand to ensure deep coverage.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1534161783729{margin-right: -10px !important;padding-top: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″ css=”.vc_custom_1534161793989{padding-top: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1534155407572{margin-left: 0px !important;}”][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]These shutters were from our Premium Elm range with a grain you can ‘feel’ giving a subtly more rustic design, whereas our Classic Poplar stained shutters are a popular choice for those who prefer smooth to touch louvres as Poplar wood has a tighter grain.

The Penthouse, overlooking the River Dee, Chester

We would go almost anywhere to do a job to get the business of the ground. We’d go all over the UK and abroad – one job we even flew out to Marbella to install shutters on a mansion place. No job was too big or too far for Shutterly Fabulous!

In all the installations, we’ve never forgotten the lovely couple who had a gorgeous penthouse overlooking the river in Chester. They came to us needing shutters for quite a few ‘out of the norm’ windows. Some were very tall, arched windows, some were big velux windows, and a set of sliding doors.

We love a good challenge, and this was a great installation. Little did we know at the time that that one bathroom photograph would spiral coverage in national magazines…

Smallbone Kitchens, London

We’ve loved working with style icons over the years and Kelly Hoppen was a long time partner of Shutterly Fabulous. This was another particularly memorable installation as Kelly was launching a kitchen range with Smallbone Kitchens. We heard through the grapevine that their showroom in Kensington didn’t have window dressing, so we brought our shutter fabulousness to their space.

They age gracefully.

Working with designers over the years has given us an edge on colour in the home. Shutterly Fabulous have colour matched thousands of shutters to Farrow & Ball, Dulux Trade and RAL colours, and we also have our very own designer collection which features a spectrum of cotton, taupe and dark grey paints, plus a wide variety of stains.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″ css=”.vc_custom_1534161966073{padding-top: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1534162177040{padding-top: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″ css=”.vc_custom_1534161974527{padding-top: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1534162188251{padding-top: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

We’ve caused quite a stir in the shutter-verse over the years…

We’re proud to have been featured in the interior magazines we once only flicked through. Some of our proudest features were in titles like ELLE Decoration, Ideal Home, Metro and many many more…[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Living Etc May 2016
